2015 Bangsund Pinot Noir

2015 Bangsund Pinot Noir

$34.00

Wine Club Price: $27.20

Soft and earthy with notes of warm honey comb, cherry fruit leather, and tobacco leaves. A warmer weather pinot noir with balanced acidity.

Bangsund Pinot Noir sits on a mound in front of the family home and features almost 50-year-old vines. Because The Dalles is a warmer and drier region of the Gorge, the Pinot Noir is dramatically different than that of typical Oregon Pinots. It reflects dramatically different nuances of riper fruit and earth notes – juicy ripe cherries, honeycomb and sun-warmed soils and a softer acidity of 3.9 pH. A classic French left bank Pinot, yet reflecting the uniqueness of our Columbia Gorge region. We adoringly call it our ‘happy hour wine’ and it pairs well with charcuterie and meaty fish. A choice recipe, included with the purchase of the wine, is Jocelyn’s Baked Salmon with Morel Tarragon Cream Sauce. Only 135 cases produced.

Bangsund vineyard is owned and operated by John and Fran Bangsund and is located in a steep side canyon off the Columbia River in The Dalles, Oregon. John Bangsund is a salt-of-the-earth type and true pioneer of the Columbia Gorge. Almost 50 years ago, he got it in his head to plant grapes in The Dalles, Oregon, an industrial river town about 20 miles east of Hood River. While it wasn’t unusual to plant fruit in the area, wine grapes weren’t among the typical things planted. However, his steep and narrow 7-acre property was uniquely suited to growing a variety of grapes. As with many areas of our gorgeous Gorge, the slice of land has a dramatic slope and goes from about 300 feet to 1000 feet. This provides a host of conditions from cooler at the bottom where the cold air rolls down from Mt. Hood every night to dry and intensely hot at the terraced top where the sun bakes the stony slope. What does that mean? It means a world of wine varieties grow here! Four are grown: a Rhine varietal, Riesling; a Burgundy varietal, Pinot Noir; a Rhone varietal, Syrah and a Bordeaux varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon. Wine grapes that prefer cooler weather like Pinot Noir and Riesling happily grow at the bottom while varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah thrive near the top. These overlapping conditions of good soils, great heat and very cool nights make this yet another example why the Columbia Gorge Region is such an astonishing locale.
